The very popular and often controversial Top Gear has named Volkswagen's Scirocco as its top Car Of The Year for 2008.
The BBC auto hub praises the coupe for its sporty demeanor and affordability, calling it "a common man's exotic."
Top Gear's Tom Ford writes, "...the reason that it's here, in the hallowed halls of the Top Gear Awards, is not because it's the best-looking car to have been launched this year. Not because it is the most precise, the most poised or the most powerful. But because VW has managed, without recourse to the rape of history, to produce a car that is at once fun, stylish and, above all, almost affordable. This is one for us, people. Rejoice."
The Scirocco is based on the GTI, sharing its length and wheelbase, however, the former is lower and wider for better handling. In top form, power comes from a turbo 2.0-liter 200-horse four-cylinder.
To celebrate, VolksWatch has added new photos to its Scirocco photo gallery. Follow the link below.
Very unfortunately, the Scirocco is not available in North America. Perhaps someday.
